Dear Families,
Welcome back to school. I hope everyone had a nice and relaxing Christmas break and a wonderful celebration of the new year! I know that 2021 came with so many promises of new beginnings and new hope. But over the past day, we have seen some unbelievable and sad events play out at our nation’s capitol that feel very much 2020esque. I have been receiving a lot of parental questions…asking me about how we can talk about this with our kids and what can teachers do. As a teacher, I always look at the lessons we can learn from any situation, no matter the circumstances.
The first thing we need to do, as their protectors, is to let our children know that as scary as some of these images and videos are, that they are safe. The second thing is that there is never going to be an excuse for violence. As you saw, violence did not win the day. Clear lesson here.
Moving forward, here is how I know we are going to be ok; here is how we know humanity is going to be ok. No matter what side of the aisle you sit on, democrat, republican, independent or other, we are all, first and foremost, human. And God created humans. God loved his creations so much, and humans most of all, that he created us in his likeness. And we know that God IS love. Therefore, WE are love. There is a lot of hope in this idea. So the main thing here is that there is hope, and a guarantee, that love and peace will overcome all evil, simply because it is how we are built.
Because we are created with love and hope in our DNA, it is undeniable that it will prevail, as it did yesterday. That’s how I know we are going to be ok. Humanity and love wins. It always does. It always will.
With hope,
