Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a very busy year filled with much learning and fun! The Kindergarten school year marks one of the most important milestones in your child's life. Ms. McDermott does her very best to make Kindergarten not only an enjoyable time for you child, but a time filled with meaningful learning as well.

Reading:
Our reading curriculum is a strong literature based phonics program called Super Kids. The following are the goals of the Kindergarten level of this program:

  • To introduce children to the alphabet and how it works by connecting sounds with letters.

  • To teach phonemic awareness.

  • To develop both oral vocabulary and reading vocabulary.

  • To develop fluency when reading.

Mathematics:
The math program provides the children with the skills and knowledge they need to become problem solvers. They are introduced to concepts such as shapes, sizes, money, time, patterns and classification. By the end of the year, they will be introduced to addition and subtraction of numbers.

Spanish:
Kindergarten has Spanish class two days per week. This is an introduction to conversational Spanish through oral teaching, songs and games.

Religion:
One of the general objectives of our religion program entails helping the children understand and appreciate God's love and goodness. Another objective is that students shall learn the importance of behaving kindly toward others in school and at home. The children will learn about the events in the life of Jesus through stories and activities.

Computers / P.E. / Science:
Students receive instruction in each of these areas of study one time per week.
