1st GradeReading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Religion are all taught to students during the first grade year. All objectives for each subject are outlined below:
Reading and Writing: - Phonemic awareness - Decoding and word recognition - Vocabulary and concept development - Reading comprehension of appropriate grade level text - Fluency - Writing strategies for writing sentences and paragraphs - Sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation - Spelling Mathematics: - Total value of a collection of coins - Understand and use numbers up to 100 - Demonstrate the meaning of addition and subtraction, and use these operations to solve problems - Understand the place value of ones, tens and hundreds - Use number sentences with operational symbols and expressions to solve problems - Tell time to the hour and half hour using digital and traditional clocks - Identification of common geometric shapes and their classification by common attributes - Organize, represent and compare data by categories on simple graphs and charts - Reasoning on how to set up a problem, solve it and justify it Science: - Understand the concept of plants and animals meeting their needs in different ways - Understand how the weather can be observed and described - Understand the concept of materials coming in different forms - Locate body parts and their functions Social Studies: - Describe rights and individual responsibilities of citizenship - Compare and contrast geographic locations of places and people - Understand symbols, icons and traditions of the United States that provide a sense of community across time - Compare and contrast everyday life in different times and places around the world. - Recognize that some aspects of people, places and things change over time while others remain the same. - Understand the concept of exchange and the use of money to purchase goods and services. Religion: - Understand and appreciate God's love - Familiarization with events in Jesus' life through Bible stories - Incorporation of good values into daily activities |
