2nd Grade
Curriculum in the second grade covers Reading and Writing, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Religion. All curriculum goals are outlined below:
Reading and Writing: - Decoding and word recognition - Vocabulary and concept development - Understand and read grade-level material - Use titles, tables and heading to identify information - Understand author's purpose and identify facts in text - Read and respond to grade-level material - Organize thought process in clear, legible handwriting - Demonstrate ability to use reference materials - Compose narrative writing that exhibits sequencing and story elements - Write a friendly letter - Demonstrate ability to use proper grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization and spelling - Comprehend and organize information delivered orally - Retell story elements and report on facts and details of various sources of information Mathematics: - Understand numbers and their place value in relation to whole numbers up to 1,000 - Estimate, calculate, and solve problems using addition and subtraction of two- and three- digit numbers - Solve simple multiplication and division problems - Understand fractions - Demonstrate the ability to add and subtract money - Estimate numbers in different place values - Identify and compare units of measurement - Classify and formulate shapes - Understand and utilize graphs - Identify and interpret how linear patterns grow - Demonstrate ability to use mathematical tools and solve problems with reasoning Science: - Comprehend physical sciences and motion of objects - Understand the life cycles of plants and animals - Distinguish the properties and resources of human activity - Conduct and investigate experiments Social Studies: - Differentiate concepts of time - Demonstrate skill in understanding maps - Explain government institutions - Understand basic economic concepts - Understand the importance of heroic icons of history and how they made a difference Religion: - Recognize the presence of Christ and prepare for the First Communion and First Reconciliation - Identify the three persons of the Trinity and Mary as Jesus' mother - Understand that God uses the Bible to communicate to us - Practice acts of kindness, love, forgiveness, and helping those in our community, home, school, and Church as Jesus has demonstrated |
